$199 Playstation 3, New SKU Inbound?

It's a well known fact that the Playstation 3 costs a couple of bob more than it's competitors, the Xbox 360 and the Wii. With Activision head honcho, Bobby Kotick recently scolding Sony over their price point and performance, it seems everyone but Sony themselves thinks the PS3 is over priced. Hit the jump for more.

This will never happen , at least this year. look the PSP Go price, its almost $250, so how can we expect PS3 to be a $199 or even $299. Not gonna happen. if they cut PSP Go price along with PS3, then it might. I don't see any reason by now to slash the PSP Go price. thanks !!

Yep, totally agree with TruMan - This won't happen this year, and to be honest, I'm not sure whether they will reduce it at all this year. Sony posted a $1.4billion loss last year. This year its all about being profitable, even if it means selling less.

Wow it's really interesting how many people want one . Even 360 fanboys are wanting to take the plunge. Sony, take a serious look at this and drop the price !

@Cav - I Agree. And at $199 who wouldn't?

Whats the bet most of the PS3's were bought by Target staff though?

In any case a substantial PS3 price cut would definitely be the single biggest catalyst for a larger Sony install base. Hopefully the company listens because even with the wicked line up of games the PS3 has coming this fall, if they retain a $700 price tag, I can only see them fighting a very difficult battle. (One that would at the very least be made much easier with a price cut than without)

Cheers,

Kes

The PS3 is not $700. It's $400 + tax = $450 (For Me)
Sure if you include games. But its a beautiful entertainment system.

Xbox is ugly IMO. Not saying its worse, but people always over look the $50/year fee, wireless adapter is like $100 ... and its failure rate. PS3 is purty anyways, the blue ray disks dont scratches, much more powerful system.

@GC PS3 is definitely $700. You are looking at American prices. The article specifically talks about Australian prices. The 80gb model is $699 out here.

I went to look at prices at Myers the other day and they said that they ran out and were not buying anymore as their buyer believes the console is about to change.

I went to check out the deals at Indooroopilly in Brisbane. When I went to Myers they said they have sold out and wouldn't be getting more as there buyer believes it is going slimline.

This story sounds vaguely dubious to me. My guess is that something like this is what actually happened:

When the 80GB model was unreleased, a handful of stores round Oz had 40GB models left. They didn't send them back to Sony, but stashed them in their back rooms, and they were left there untouched till months later when this random price change came through. Since there were only a few left, I doubt any of them ever hit the shop floor. Staff would probably have snagged all of them.
